Every dog has his day!
No truer words were ever spoken. Each one also has his or her own story. Some of those are recounted here, for your enjoyment, amusement, or heartfelt sympathy.
New Spirit volunteers work hard to make sure that our dogs get that day in the sun!
Siggins' Story
You might have noticed Siggins on the home page. He was found in an outdoor shelter, dirty, matted and so debilitated that he could not wag his tail. The victim of what appeared to be years of neglect by his owner, he was picked up as a stray after being hit by a car. Due to his age, about 12 years, he was not a good candidate for adoption in the shelter.
Fortunately, he caught the eye of a rescue worker and was pulled from the shelter. After months of rehab, his injuries healed as well as could be expected for a senior dog and he was eventually adopted by a loving couple that wanted to give an old dog a good home. Every day is now Siggin's day thanks to people who cared. His story is the essence of rescue.

Congratulations to Ozzy and his new forever home with Lesley Muir-Jones! Leslie volunteers with Glen Highland Border Collie Rescue and just couldn't resist Ozzy's charms!
Update June 20, 2008: Bella has been adopted!
Another success story -- this gorgeous young girl has found her forever home!
Mark
Mark is a handsome young special needs boy between 1 and 2 who was picked up stray. It's a miracle he wasn't hit by a car. Mark is the result of a merle-to-merle breeding and his vision and hearing are impaired as a result.
Mark's eyes never fully developed but he sees shadows and reacts to louder noises. There's nothing wrong with his nose when it comes to finding a person to give him some love and attention though! He likes to go to the outdoor run but if people are inside the shelter, that's where he'll be. He's also good with other dogs.
Mark is currently with Fur Angels
Animal Sanctuary in Aurora, IL.

Annie
My name is Annie. My foster Mom found me at a dumpster in the country. I was so hungry and scared. But now I love to cuddle and I love people. I play well with all the other dogs, but I want my parents attention all to myself. I don't like to be alone at night, would really like to sleep in bed with you or near you. I'm housetrained, and an indoor dog, though I love to go out to play. I'm a very good dog for kids. I'm very smart; like I can open the door to go in. I can fit into most situations. My foster parents think I'm so cute and sweet. I like to get on back of the couch and look out the window. I need a someone to love me and help me feel secure, so I wont ever have to be afraid again. I want to go to a Foster or forever home. Please dont put me in a kennel or run. I'm 9 months old and weigh in at 31 lb, so I'm going to be little.
This pet is: up to date with routine shots, already house trained, altered.
